When the new Scary Movie was announced, fans were thrilled to learn that many of the franchise’s original stars would be returning. Familiar faces such as Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans all signed on for the franchise revival. However, one notable absence quickly caught fans’ attention: Shannon Elizabeth.

According to Elizabeth herself, the reason is surprisingly simple—she was never invited back. In an interview earlier this year, the actress revealed that she had hoped to return as Buffy Gilmore and would have gladly participated, but she “didn’t get the call.” Despite her disappointment, she said she remains supportive of the project and plans to watch it as a fan.

After her comments generated headlines, Marlon Wayans addressed the situation publicly. He explained that Elizabeth’s absence was not personal and that the filmmakers were already bringing back a large number of returning characters. According to Wayans, there were simply “too many people coming back,” making it difficult to include everyone from the original movie. He also suggested that the door remains open for Elizabeth to appear in a future installment.

The new film is designed as both a reboot and a reunion, bringing together many of the franchise’s most recognizable stars while introducing new characters and modern horror parodies. The returning cast already includes several fan favorites from the 2000 original, making it one of the largest reunions in the series’ history.

Ironically, Elizabeth’s character Buffy was one of the most memorable figures in the first movie. Her cheerleader parody became a fan favorite, and even though Buffy was famously beheaded during the film, Scary Movie has never been known for strict continuity. Several characters have returned from seemingly impossible situations throughout the franchise, meaning her absence wasn’t due to any story limitation.

The good news for fans is that there doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between Elizabeth and the filmmakers. Wayans publicly expressed his affection for his former co-star, and even Anna Faris voiced her support for Elizabeth after news of her absence became public.

So the short answer is: Shannon Elizabeth isn’t in the new Scary Movie because she wasn’t asked to return, not because she declined the role or had a falling out with the cast. The filmmakers prioritized a large group of returning characters, and Elizabeth ended up being left out of this particular reunion. However, based on comments from both sides, a future return remains a possibility.
